Useful Gadget of the Week: Edision HDMI Modulator Distributes HD Over Coax

A while back we covered this eye-wateringly expensive option to modulate HD signals over your home’s existing coax cables. But now there’s a more affordable choice…

The Edision HDMI Modulator distributes full HD over an existing coax network so it can be used as an HDMI modulator to convert the output from say your Sky box, Blu-ray player, Apple TV or other streamer etc into a DVB-T MPEG4 signal which can then feed a number of DVB-T capable TVs (via a splitter)

The HD modulator is easy to install and operate Provides RF Loop Through. It covers 50MHZ~2400MHZ and has a 4G – LTE (Long Term Evolution) filtering switch.

It is possible to set the output frequency and it can be used with the Sky Magic Eye when used in conjunction with a Sky box.

  1. This device has its uses, mainly for CCTV but there are a few things to watch out for:

    1. There will be a 1 second delay on the video which could be a pain when navigating TV guide menus etc.
    2. Make sure your TVs are modern, so they stand a good chance of supporting Mpeg4 decoding
    3. There could be issues with premium channels which are HDCP encrypted.

For a better result consider distributing HDMI video over HDBaseT carried on CAT6 cables. The picture quality will be superior, there will be no delay, and infra-red remote signals will be passed back without the addition of ‘magic eyes’ etc.
